Artist statement

Hannah Grace works in a mixed media format concentrating on sculpture and relief painting, exploring the ideas of the close connection between painting and the three dimentional form.

Her sculptures are flowing structures consisting of a conglomeration of everyday objects, items that respond to the space around it and interact with the site specific architecture.

The idea of reclaiming a forgotten item and transforming it into an art form fascinates her. Thus the work is transposed from a mundane object to an art form.

Juxtaposing certain objects into a playful frenzy of colour-coded expression is a point of reflection where she looks at the aesthetic need of the work and questions the ideology of the piece.

Her work thrives on the narrative of the object,interlinking its relationships with familiar objects, creating a new dimension to the object, creating "precisely choreographed" installations.

Through studying sculpture Hannah has taken the qualities of working with a three dimentional forms and transposes them into relief paintings using the canvas as a platform to highlight the idea of an image interacting with the light and textures of found materials.

Each painting is carefully considered by working with the idea of elevating each layer to its highest potential, building up a foundation which will dictate the narrative of the piece.

The layers are sealed and left to create a natural formation upon the canvas. This process of relief painting has become an examination of the inherent structural patterns that form part of the natural beauties of the world.
